Why Education Needs The Arts

The article, "Why Education Needs The Arts" by Sophie Yuen Mason and Mike Connolly discusses exactly what the title says: why does education need the arts? Without the arts america would change dramatically. Many people view how competitive we are globally as something we need. Without the creativity that the arts give us, we would become less competitive globally. Creativity is an aspect of life that we all need. If we live a life without the arts, we are just like "human robots". The arts teach important skills such as leadership, teamwork, comprehension, courage, and a sense of worth. In academic classes there are the average, the smart, and the below average students. However, in the arts everyone is viewed equally because we all rely on eachother. We should all be seen as equals, instead of having a type of caste system.

Chapter 11: Art and Architecture

In the article, "Chapter 11: Art and Architecture" by Walter Hazen, Hazen describes how art and architecture are linked through ancient times. Art travels back many centuries to the start of mankind. Cavemen drew pictures in their caves to show what they did that day. Some of the greatest wonders of the world started as a sketch. The Eiffle Tower, Sphinx, the Great Wall of China, and many more. Without art none of these wonders would be here today. All of these wonders had to start as something. Art is a way for us to connect with our ancestry and history. Greek art and theatre plays are still in action today. Just as everyone is unique, we all have our own unique way of expressing our creativity. Without teaching art people wouldn't be able to show off their creativity in ways that are comfortable for them, or show off their own hidden talents.

No Child Left Behind and Fine Arts Classes

The article, "No Child Left Behind and Fine Arts Classes" by Tina Beveridge describes how the No Child Left Behind Act effects the fine arts. The NCLB act states that teachers and administrators should help students that are falling behind in order to catch up. Teachers would then take kids out of their fine arts classes. Whenever funding is short at schools they immediatly get rid of the arts programs instead of trying to raise the money. A lot of people think that math and science are the most important subjects and nothing else is really necessary. Music and art have its own skills that need to be taught. The arts teach kids how to work together and learn how to be a leader. Things like that are easier to teach with the arts than in classrooms. If people choose to neglect the arts then what is the point in keeping the No Child Left Behind Act?

Instrumental Playing

The article, "Instrumental Playing" by Mark Rimmer describes why music is important. Without music, people are more likely to become anti-social. Music is a way for people to make new friends and be themselves. The type of music you listen to describes your personality. Music is also a way calm down when they are stressed. Music is a way for the community to come together and have a good time. Most people have listened to at least one type of music. Music gives you self-confidence, courage, creativity, and a way to become more outgoing. You never know, you could end up meeting you best friend or future spouse by seeing them wearing a band's logo.

Essential Questions

The fine arts are majorally important to our daily lives. Most people listen to music either on their way to school or work. I can guarentee that everyone has at least drawn one thing in their life time. The fine arts allow us to express ourselves creatively and in our own way. To some kids the arts could be a stress reliever. Also, in high school we have formal dances; how are we supposed to dance formally if the schools take out dance class? How are we supposed to express ourselves creatively without the arts? What? Fine Arts Programs-Music, Art, Dance, ect. Who? How are middle and high school students effected by the fine arts? When? The years 2000-2012 Where? United States of America Why? Many people see the arts as unimportant when in all actuality they are.
